An Introduction to Testament
I never thought about this until recently, but the word spelling in Middle English meant “to speak, preach, talk, tell.”1 We also use the word to define the way to utter into the world magic. It probably shouldn’t be surprising the close connection between these things, but it has been sitting in my head ever since I had to start explaining my work to others.
It is either odd or on brand that my brain has connected magic to marketing.
Though, I do think that the act of creation is a kind of magic. Writing. Painting. Saying lines aloud. All these things require the mysterious and lonely inner life of the creator to appear for others to see. The artist, author, or actor wrestles with themself, fights past insecurity and doubt, and with skills born of endless practice, manifests something utterly unique.
If you ponder that for a minute, it is absolutely wild that a) anything gets created in the world b) we don’t value the act more highly than, say, hedge fund management. Since that is not true, this creator has to spell into the world marketing material.
Today I am sharing with you the first of many videos I am working on to explain my work and entice people to purchase. I have found that it is easier for me to try and explain the book than it is to write about it. It also gives me the opportunity to indulge in another creative interest, as if I don’t have enough to do.
So I hope that this work entices you to pick up a copy of Testament. If it isn’t to your taste, there is an easy way to support me and any other artist you know. We live in an algorithmic age, so every like, comment, share, and view counts.
One never knows what piece of art with touch a soul.
