The following are selected pieces I have worked on over the years. I am a multimedia artist, using a variety of tools and mediums to express my creative urge. I work mostly in the realm of the fantastical, tying my artwork to my writing.
Testament Testament is both a five part epic poem and a hand made book. Every signature is hand written. Every page is a combination of Lino cut block prints and hand painting. The book was then hand bound with a coptic stitch between hand painted wood covers. A project that took me around 3 years to finish.
The Duel Painted with acrylic paint on 32 inch by 40 inch, 24 cm square paper boxes, and in a small bronze locket. The photographs were taken by talented Gavin Morrisey .
VIDEO As a young artist I went through a phase of fascination with the form of the triptych, but struggled to execute. Completing a three year long project before starting this one convinced me I could go back to being ambitious in my art again. After about six months of work, I completed all three of these 32 inch by 40 inch monsters.
VIDEO When I start a project I generally have some sort of broad story in my head as to what it is about, but nothing fully baked. I like to discover it as I go along as I compensate for the mistakes I make along the way. It is probably my favorite part of painting, pivoting when I did something I didn’t intend. It’s that same mindset that lets me be both a perfectionist and accepting of small failures.
VIDEO In the beginning, I was only intending on doing the red panels you see affixed to the bottom of each panel. I had purchased those paper boxes years ago and wanted to make either a stations of the cross-style piece, or three triptych. After I finished the first one, the rest of the piece just kind of came together as I expanded the scope after I realized the source I was tapping into opened up some doors to the possibilities.
Voltron, The Black Paladin In September 2018, Sam reached out to me about participating in his Voltron Art Show at Toy de Jour and I have to admit I was intrigued. It had been at least 20 years since I had been a part of an art show, so I dove in to make this large piece.
The Mountain The Mountain is about the children of one of the protagonists from some other work I have done heading towards a foreboding place to try and stop him from ending the world. It is a large work of acrylic on canvas.
VIDEO Photography doesn’t do this enough justice, but I think this zoomed in view gives you a sense of what it looks like in person. The usage of dark and light colored glazes was super powerful for this work.
