The Dragon Magazine Number 13 - April 1978
Tolkien, D&D, and +David Turner Might Be Happy
So today, we take a look at issue 13, notable for a Gardner Fox short story and this little editorial on Tolkien and Dungeons & Dragons. This is of particular interest to me as when I first found the game I thought the game was meant to try and emulate Middle Earth. In my Junior High mind, which had consumed all sorts of fantasy fiction (even TSR published stuff) well before playing the game, it made sense that was what they were doing. After all why the hell would they be in the game as characters? They don't show up as protagonists in any of the sword and sorcery stuff.
This article is interesting because it touches on the one true way philosophy, though not as stridently as Gary's earlier comments about variants to his mode of play not being Dungeons and Dragons. Interesting stuff considering this was written in 1978.

The other item of interest is the winners from the previous Creature Feature contest are finally announced, though their entries are not published yet. I hope tomorrow we get to see what they come up with.

Looking at the names of the winners notice that one of them is a woman, which honestly surprised me. Even today, gaming is dominated by white males, so seeing a player avid enough to submit something to a magazine that is a woman is pretty cool.
